Error Code: EL 0C – System Lacks Refrigerant
What this means:
The system has detected insufficient refrigerant. This may be due to installation issues, improper valve positions, excessive pipe length, or refrigerant leakage.
Common causes include:
Outdoor unit valves are not fully open (not releasing pre-charged refrigerant).
Piping length exceeds the precharged limit (typically 25 ft per zone).
Leakage at fittings or connections, especially after new installation.
How to identify a leak:
Look for oil residue around joints or fittings.
Listen for hissing or bubbling sounds.
Apply soapy water to the tubing and watch for bubbles.
Use leak detectors or nitrogen pressure testing for confirmation.
Try this first (quick reset):
Power off the system.
Wait at least 15 minutes.
Turn it back on and check operation.
Next steps (for technicians):
Feel airflow at the indoor unit:
If no cool or warm air is present → proceed with leak inspection.
Check for system leakage:
If found → repair and recharge with refrigerant.
Check sensors:
Is T2 sensor loose? → secure it.
Is T1 sensor too close to the evaporator? → reposition it.
If sensors are correctly installed and no leak exists:
Recharge the refrigerant (approx. 10% of the nameplate charge).
If error still remains after all checks:
Replace the indoor PCB.
What you might need:
Additional refrigerant
Leak detection tools
Indoor PCB
Soapy water or electronic leak tester
Helpful tip:
This is one of the most common errors on a new install. Always verify valve position and piping length before diagnosing deeper issues.
