Short answer: partly. You can mount the indoor and outdoor units and run the lines yourself, but a licensed HVAC technician must do the pressure test, vacuum, opening of the service valves and the electrical connection. If they don't, the warranty is void.
| Step | Who can do it |
|---|---|
| Mounting the indoor and outdoor units | You |
| Drilling the wall and running the line set, cable and drain | You |
| Pressure test and vacuum (evacuation) of the line set | Licensed HVAC technician |
| Opening the service valves and adding refrigerant if needed | Licensed HVAC technician |
| Electrical connection (breaker, disconnect, power cable) | Licensed technician or electrician |
Why the technician steps matter
- Warranty: pressure testing and evacuation must be done by a licensed HVAC professional to keep your warranty valid.
- Performance and lifespan: a proper vacuum removes moisture and air that damage the compressor over time.
- Safety: refrigerant and high-voltage wiring need the right training and tools.
