Short answer: HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) measures how efficiently a heat pump heats over a full heating season. The higher the HSPF, the less electricity it uses to heat your home.
How it is calculated
HSPF is the total heat delivered during the heating season (in BTUs), divided by the electricity used over the same period (in watt-hours). Newer ratings use HSPF2, which is measured under conditions closer to real homes.
