My mini split won't turn on. What should I check?

Short answer: most units that won't start have no power, a remote problem, or an error code. Check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect switch, change the remote batteries, then try the manual power button on the indoor unit.

1. Check the power

  • Breaker: find the breaker for the mini split. If it has tripped, switch it fully OFF, then ON.
  • Outdoor disconnect switch: some systems have a disconnect box on the wall near the outdoor unit. Make sure it is ON.
  • If the breaker trips again, stop here. This points to an electrical fault. Call a licensed electrician or HVAC technician.

2. Check the remote

  • Put in fresh batteries, the right way round.
  • Point the remote straight at the indoor unit with nothing in between.
  • Test without the remote: lift the front panel and press the small manual (emergency) power button. If the unit starts, the problem is the remote. See Remote Control Manuals.

3. Reset the system

Switch the breaker OFF for at least 30 minutes, then back ON. Turn the unit on with the remote.

4. Look for an error code

If the display shows a code (for example E1, E5, P0) or the lights flash, the unit has stopped itself to protect against a fault. Look up the code: AURA series error codes, LETO series error codes, or all error code articles. Not sure which series you have? See How to find your model number.

5. Check the settings

The unit may be on but idle. Make sure it is in COOL or HEAT mode, with the set temperature at least 2–3°F (1–2°C) below the room temperature for cooling, or above it for heating.

6. Check the outdoor unit

Look for ice, snow, leaves or debris around it. If you hear the fan or compressor try to start and stop, note it for the technician.

Never open the indoor or outdoor unit yourself unless you are trained. Internal repairs need a licensed HVAC technician.

Still need help?

Submit a support ticket and include:

  • What happens when you press the remote and the manual button (nothing, a beep, lights)
  • A photo of the display or any flashing lights
  • A photo of the model/serial label on the right side of the indoor unit (where to find it)
