What is COP?

Coefficient of Performance is a ratio between the rate at which the heat pump transfers thermal energy (in kW), and the amount of electrical power required to do the pumping (in kW).  As an example, if a heat pump uses 1kW of electrical energy to transfer 4 kW of heat into or out of an indoor space, the COP would be 4.   Meaning you will pay for 1kW of electricity and benefit from 4kW worth of heat.  The higher the COP of the heat pump, the more energy efficient it is.
