How do I know if my heat pump is low on Refrigerant?

There are several symptoms when a heat pump could be low on refrigerant.   Here are some common signs that your system could be low.

Longer Run Times: Comparing the run times of your system to prior run times under similar conditions and temperatures can provide an indication.   If your system is running longer than it typically had in the past and is struggling to or not achieving set-point, this can be low refrigerant.

Ice Build Up:  A build up of ice on your evaporator can be in indication of a low charge.  This will reduce airflow and and ultimately the systems ability to cool or heat.  A dirty air filter can also give this same indication, this should be checked and remedied first.

Reduced Heating/Cooling ability: A system that is low on refrigerant will have a decreased cooing and heating capacity.  You may notice air that is not as cool or warm as it once was as the refrigerant is responsible to transfer heat in and out of the indoor space.  This will also coincide with Longer Run Times.

Gurgling or Hissing Noise: Refrigerant leaking from a system can sometimes be heard and even visibly seen as a slight mist.

If you suspect your system is low on refrigerant, you should call in a licensed HVAC technician to locate and repair the leak and recharge the system.  All leaks must be repaired prior to recharging a system.
