Short answer: this is normal. Senville units are set at the factory to go 2 to 4 degrees past your set temperature before they slow down. This makes sure the whole room reaches the temperature, not just the air near the unit.
Why it happens
The indoor unit measures the air temperature where it is installed, usually high on the wall. Warm air rises, so in heating mode the air near the unit is warmer than the air where you sit. The built-in margin (called temperature compensation) makes up for this difference.
First, check where the temperature is being measured
If your remote has the Follow Me function turned on, the unit reads the temperature at the remote instead of at the indoor unit. A remote left in a sunny spot or near a heat source will make the unit stop too early or run too long. Keep the remote where you spend time, out of direct sun.
How to change the margin
- Concealed duct, ceiling cassette and floor-mounted units: the margin is set with the DIP switch labelled SW6 on the indoor unit's control board. This is inside the unit, so have your HVAC technician change it.
- Wall-mounted units (LETO, AURA): submit a support ticket with your model number and we will send the steps for your remote.
When it is not normal
A difference of more than 4 degrees, or a room that never reaches the set temperature, can point to a problem. Check these first:
- The air filters are clean (rinse in lukewarm water, let dry fully).
- The unit is in COOL or HEAT mode, not FAN or DRY.
- Nothing blocks the indoor unit or the outdoor unit.
- The unit is the right size for the room.
Then see My mini split is not cooling or heating properly. The attached Temperature variance guide helps a technician pinpoint the cause.
Still need help?
Submit a support ticket and include:
- The set temperature, and the room temperature you measured (and where)
- The mode (COOL or HEAT)
- A photo of the model/serial label on the right side of the indoor unit (where to find it)
